Alpaca: Fibre Guide for Knitters and Crocheters
Alpaca comes from the alpaca, a South American camelid related to (but distinct from) llamas — and its defining trait for knitters and crocheters is almost the opposite of wool's: alpaca has very little natural elastic recovery, which changes how a garment made from it actually behaves over time.
Warmer and heavier than wool at the same weight

A ball band listing "suri alpaca" specifically is signaling a notably different hand than a generic "alpaca" label.
Fibre grades and where they end up
Like Merino, alpaca fibre is graded by fineness, and the finest grades (often called "royal" or "baby" alpaca, terms describing fibre diameter rather than the animal's actual age) are reserved for next-to-skin garments, while coarser grades from the same fleece commonly go into outerwear, rugs, or blended yarns where softness matters less than durability and bulk. A single fleece can yield several different grades, which is part of why alpaca yarn quality varies more between specific products than a single-word "alpaca" label might suggest.
Care
Alpaca is generally hand-wash only, since it lacks wool's specific chemistry for superwash treatment in most commercial processing. It doesn't felt as readily as wool does, given the reduced crimp, but should still be treated gently — a hot, agitated wash can still full and distort the fabric even without full felting.
