Bamboo yarn is a regenerated cellulose fibre — the raw plant material is broken down chemically and re-extruded into a new fibre, the same broad process used for viscose and rayon generally, just starting from bamboo pulp instead of wood pulp or another cellulose source.

Why "bamboo" the plant and "bamboo yarn" the product aren't the same story

Bamboo the plant is genuinely fast-growing and requires relatively little water and no pesticides compared with cotton, real facts often used in bamboo yarn marketing. But the chemical process that converts raw bamboo into spinnable viscose fibre is intensive and involves the same kind of processing as any other viscose production — by the time it's yarn, several of the plant's own natural properties (including antimicrobial claims sometimes made in marketing) don't reliably survive the processing, and are worth treating with real skepticism rather than taken at face value.

What the fibre genuinely offers

A soft, silky drape with a noticeable sheen, good stitch definition for a drapey fibre, and a cool, breathable hand closer to cotton or linen than to wool. Like most regenerated cellulose fibres, it has very little elastic recovery — plan ease deliberately rather than relying on the fabric's own stretch, the same consideration that applies to cotton and linen.

How it compares to Tencel/Lyocell

Care

Hand washing is generally recommended, and bamboo viscose can lose its shape if machine-dried on high heat — the fibre is more heat-sensitive than a durable synthetic like acrylic, closer in fragility to a natural cellulose fibre generally.

Gauge behavior

Bamboo viscose has enough drape and slip that it can be genuinely trickier to swatch consistently than a grippier fibre like wool — stitches slide more readily on the needle or hook, and the fabric itself tends to relax and grow slightly with wear more than a fibre with real elastic recovery would. Swatch generously, and treat any gauge measured on a very fresh, unworn swatch as provisional until the fabric has had some time to settle.

Blends soften the trade-offs
