1x1 Rib: Repeat, Multiple and How to Work It
1x1 rib — alternating single columns of knit and purl stitches — is the most elastic and most common ribbing pattern in knitting, and usually the first stretchy edge treatment most knitters learn. It's the default choice for cuffs, hems, and necklines specifically because that alternating structure genuinely pulls the fabric in and lets it stretch back out, unlike plain stockinette, which curls but doesn't meaningfully stretch widthwise.
The stitch multiple
1x1 rib requires a stitch count that's a multiple of 2 — every repeat is one knit stitch and one purl stitch, so an odd total stitch count leaves an unpaired stitch that breaks the pattern at the join (working in the round) or at the row edge (working flat). How to work it
Working flat: Row 1 — *k1, p1; repeat from * to end. Row 2 — repeat Row 1 (because you're now looking at the stitches from the other side, a knit stitch as seen from the front looks like a purl from the back, so working every stitch "as it appears" reproduces the same k1, p1 pattern on both sides).
Working in the round: every round is simply *k1, p1; repeat from * to end, since you're always looking at the same (public) face of the fabric.
Why it uses more yarn than stockinette
Because the alternating knit and purl columns actively draw the fabric in widthwise, a 1x1 rib panel uses noticeably more yarn per square inch of finished width than the same yarn worked in plain stockinette — the yarn has to travel further per stitch to produce that pulled-in structure. Common mistakes with 1x1 rib
Losing track of which stitch comes next. Because the pattern alternates every single stitch, it's easy to lose your place after a distraction — reading your knitting (a knit stitch looks like a smooth "v," a purl looks like a small horizontal bump) rather than counting from memory will keep you oriented even after a pause.
An odd stitch count that "almost" works. An odd total will let you rib most of a round or row before the pattern breaks at the seam — this is a strong sign to recount your total stitches against the multiple-of-2 requirement rather than a stitch-pattern problem to troubleshoot.
Expecting the same stretch from every yarn. 1x1 rib's elasticity comes partly from the stitch structure and partly from the yarn's own fibre elasticity — wool ribs noticeably springier than cotton or acrylic at an identical gauge, because wool's fibre crimp adds recovery the stitch structure alone doesn't provide.
