Where the remainder goes
Stitch counts rarely divide perfectly evenly by the number of shaping actions required. Rather than spreading a leftover stitch or two unevenly through the repeat (which produces a repeat that isn't actually uniform, and is hard to follow by eye), this calculator's convention places any remainder once, as a plain-stitch prefix worked before the repeat begins — the same convention most published patterns use. The repeat itself stays completely uniform round after round; only the lead-in before it absorbs the leftover stitches.
Two worked examples
Decreasing from 84 stitches to 72 (a typical single round within a longer hat-crown sequence, not the whole crown in one jump) divides into 12 decrease actions with 5 plain stitches between each: "*k5, k2tog; rep from * to end — 72 sts." No remainder in this case — 84 divides cleanly by 12 actions of 6 stitches each (5 plain plus the 2-into-1 decrease).
Decreasing from 100 to 88 needs the same 12 actions, but 100 stitches doesn't divide as cleanly: the result is "k4, *k6, k2tog; rep from * to end — 88 sts," with a 4-stitch plain prefix worked once before the repeating pattern of "k6, k2tog" begins twelve times. Both examples produce the same 12 decreases — the difference is purely in how the leftover stitches distribute once you factor in the round's actual starting count.
Spreading a change across multiple rows instead of one
Some shaping — a sweater's set-in sleeve cap, a sock heel gusset, a raglan's regular decrease schedule — spreads a larger total change across several rows rather than compressing it into a single row. The calculator's second mode takes a starting count, an ending count, and a number of rows, and distributes the total change across those rows as evenly as the numbers allow, front-loading any extra action onto the earliest rows so the running stitch count is always exact and the final row lands precisely on your target — never an approximation that drifts off by a stitch or two by the end.
Why this matters more than it looks like it should
An unevenly spaced decrease round is genuinely visible in finished fabric — a cluster of decreases bunched together instead of spread through the round reads as a flaw, not a stylistic choice, in most stitch patterns. Doing this arithmetic by hand mid-project is exactly the kind of small, tedious calculation that's easy to get wrong under time pressure; getting the actual written instruction handed to you removes that risk entirely.

Does this work for crochet increase/decrease rounds too? Yes — the same even-distribution math applies whether the action is k2tog/kfb in knitting or sc2tog/2 sc in one stitch in crochet; the calculator's output uses knit notation, but the underlying spacing logic transfers directly.
What if I want the extra stitches spread at the end instead of the beginning? The tool's convention places the remainder as a lead-in prefix before the repeat starts, matching the most common published-pattern convention — you can manually shift the same repeat to start later in the round if you have a specific reason to prefer that placement.
