Start with a measurement, not a size label
"Adult" and "child" size labels vary between pattern designers more than most people expect — one brand's "Large" is another's "Medium." Head circumference doesn't have that problem, since it's a direct physical measurement rather than a label, and it's what every other hat decision in this guide is actually built on. Once you have a circumference — measured or from a chart — every other hat decision follows from it.
Negative ease: why hats fit smaller than they're cast on
Most hat brims, especially ribbed ones, are cast on 1–2 inches smaller than the actual head circumference. That's deliberate: a stretchy ribbed brim is meant to hug the head under tension, not sit at exact circumference the way a non-stretchy fabric would need to. If your hat is coming out loose despite matching your gauge to the pattern, negative ease — or the lack of it — is usually the first thing to check, not your gauge measurement.
Non-stretchy brims (plain garter, a heavily textured stitch with little give, most crochet fabric compared to knit ribbing) need less negative ease, sometimes none at all, because the fabric itself isn't going to stretch to compensate the way a knit rib will.
Gauge decides your cast-on — always swatch first
Every hat starts from the same core calculation: circumference times stitches-per-inch equals your raw cast-on count. The complication is that a rib pattern only works over specific stitch counts — 2x2 rib in multiples of 4, 1x1 rib in multiples of 2 — and your raw gauge math has no reason to land on one of those by chance. Skip the rounding step, or round carelessly, and the rib pattern visibly breaks exactly where the round joins.

Crown shaping: the part that looks harder than it is
A top-down hat starts shaping the crown from the very first round; a bottom-up hat delays it until the body reaches its full planned height. Either way, the crown's job is the same: take a wide, flat-ish circle of fabric and pull it closed into a rounded point through a sequence of decrease rounds, ending with a small enough handful of stitches (commonly 6 to 12) that drawing them shut with a tail leaves no visible gap.
The part that trips people up isn't the concept, it's the arithmetic: distributing decreases evenly around a round that usually doesn't divide cleanly by the number of decrease points you want. Published patterns handle this with a written instruction like "*k6, k2tog; rep from * to end," and when the stitch count doesn't divide evenly, a short prefix of extra plain stitches worked once before the repeat starts. How much yarn to buy
A single adult hat is a genuinely small yarn commitment — worsted weight and DK both typically fit inside one standard skein, with enough left over that a single-skein hat rarely needs a backup purchase "just in case." Sizing across ages
Hats scale predictably with head circumference from baby through adult, but the RATE of increase per age band isn't linear — head growth is fastest in infancy and slows well before a child reaches full adult head size. Rather than guessing at a size for a specific age, check the actual circumference range for that age band:
- Baby and infant sizes, from preemie through 12 months
- Toddler and child sizes, through roughly age 10
- The standard adult range, XS through 3XL

Common hat problems and what's actually wrong
A hat that comes out too loose despite matching gauge is almost always a negative-ease problem, not a gauge problem — check whether the pattern (or your own cast-on calculation) actually built in enough negative ease for your chosen stitch pattern.
A hat crown that puckers or cups oddly at the very top usually means the decrease rounds were spaced unevenly, or the final stitch count before closing was too high for the yarn weight (a bulkier yarn needs fewer stitches remaining at closure than a fine one, or the crown will sit flat and open rather than closing into a smooth point).
A brim that doesn't stay put on the head is almost always a stitch-pattern problem rather than a sizing problem — non-stretchy stitch patterns worked at standard (not negative) ease won't grip the head the way a snugly-cast-on rib will, regardless of how precisely the circumference was measured.
Worked in the round versus worked flat and seamed
Most hats are worked in the round on circular or double-pointed needles, which avoids a seam entirely and lets you try the hat on as you go — genuinely useful for checking fit before committing to the crown. Some hats, particularly certain colorwork or textured-panel designs, are worked flat and seamed instead, usually because the stitch pattern is easier to keep track of on a flat piece, or because a specific construction (like some folded-brim designs) is simpler to sew than to work seamlessly in the round. Neither approach changes the underlying circumference-and-gauge math from earlier in this guide — it changes only how you physically produce that circumference.
Colorwork and textured crowns
Stranded colorwork hats — the classic two-color crown pattern radiating out from the top — use meaningfully more yarn than a plain stockinette crown at the same gauge, because you're carrying two strands across every colorwork round rather than one. Textured crowns — cables, bobbles, or an all-over textured stitch pattern instead of plain stockinette — behave similarly: denser, more textured fabric generally uses more yarn per square inch than plain stockinette at the same gauge, for the same reason ribbing does.
